Private Art Patronage in Contemporary Japan

Yayoi Kusama - Pumpkin

Inspired by the craftsmanship and sublime beauty of Japanese art?  Love the tranquillity of a Japanese garden?  You aren’t alone.

Japan has an extraordinary appreciation for art drawing some of the world’s highest visitor numbers to its museums and galleries. With government funding continually dropping, private collections and corporate art museums become ever more important supporters of Japanese art and culture.  Hear the stories of some of those providing that support.

From an extraordinary passion project at the Itchiku Kubota Kimono Museum, to the refined tastes of gambling tycoon Kazuo Okada and the innovation and renewal of Naoshima’s Benesse Art Site, this presentation explores various manifestations of private art patronage in today’s Japan.
